【世界盃系列！「裁判」英文怎麼說？】
學生喜歡的球隊被淘汰了，常常抱怨：
[X] The umpire was terrible!
(裁判很糟糕！)
啊，這個英文裁判要吹哨！問題在哪呢？

問題是，中文的「裁判」，英文有兩個選擇！
★ umpire /ˈʌmˌpaɪr/ 通常站（或者坐）在一個地方，不會跑。所以，排球、網球、棒球等的「裁判」才會說 umpire.
★ referee /ˌrɛfəˈri/ 是跑來跑去的，所以，足球、籃球等會說 referee.
因此上面的錯句應該改為：
√ The referee was terrible!

這個還有很多又有用又好玩的說法。
例如，裁判判錯了，我們常說：
The referee blew the call!
(裁判誤判！）
這裡頭有兩個很值得學的單字：blow 跟 call。
★ Blow 這裡就是搞亂／搞砸／弄糟／失敗的意思。如：
I had an interview at a big company, but I blew it.
(我在大公司有面試，但是我表現的很爛，失敗了。）
I couldn’t believe that the class beauty would go on a date with me. Then I totally blew it.
(我不敢相信班花願意跟我約會。但最後還是搞砸了。）
A: How did the speech go?
B: Argh. I blew it.
(A: 你的演講怎麼樣? B: 唉，遭透了。）
注意，搞砸的事情通常在前面已經說過，然後 blow 的受詞就是 it.
★ Call 在口語的英文裡也很常用。
它就是決定的意思，也通常表示相當重要的決定。生意上很常用，例如：
A: Do you think we should open a new store in Tamsui?
B: Well, you’re head of sales. It’s your call.
(A: 你覺得我們應該在淡水開店? B: 嗯，你是銷售的經理，由你來決定。）
This will really affect the future of the company. I’ve got to make the right call.
(這真的會影響到公司的未來。我一定要做正確的決定。）
當然，私人的事也可以用:
A: Should I forgive my boyfriend?
B: Ooh, that’s a tough call!
(A: 我應該原諒我的男朋友嗎? B: 嗚，那是很難的決定！）
